Driving from Wales to Northumberland

Emily Frost would like to know the best route to take. She has two children and woud like an overnight stop

I am planning to drive from Newport in Wales to Alnmouth in Northumberland with my husband and two children. Could you suggest a route and an overnight stop? Emily Frost, via e-mail

Times Travel Doctor responds: With two children in tow I think I’d go for the shortest route as suggested by the AA’s extremely useful route planner (www.theaa.com ), even though you’ll find yourself on long stretches of unlovely motorway.

The journey takes just over six hours and halfway you could take a diversion into the Peak District and stay at the 16th-century Plough Inn (01433 650180, www.theploughinn-hathersage.co.uk ) in Hathersage, which has rooms that can sleep four for £150 a night B&B and a good restaurant — but you’ll need to book well in advance.

Alternatively, you could try the part-Tudor Whitley Hall hotel (01142 454444, www.whitley hall.com ) outside Sheffield, where a room for the four of you would cost £170 B&B.
