There are countless tribute albums with flimsy reason to exist (the originals being better). But Dr John’s approach to Louis Armstrong’s world is often wilfully inventive. His funkified Mack the Knife is a new song entirely; likewise a torrid Tight Like This, with Cuban rapper Telmary Diaz and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. An army of guests threaten to overwhelm the project — Bonnie Raitt, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Ledisi among them — but the infectious rhythms of New Orleans keep the show rolling. (Proper, out now)
