Ever since I had a hip replacement in May 2008, the machine has bleeped every time I have been through security at Gatwick. I am then told that I need to be searched, which immediately sets up an extreme anxiety in me because I am very non-tactile and can’t bear to be touched by a security person, however delicately she does it. I get accused of being rude, though I ensure that I am courteous in my language . When I eventually get through, I am inevitably in tears, which makes a poor start to a holiday. Have you any suggestions before I give up flying altogether?

A spokesman for Gatwick said that it was “disappointed” that you were caused such distress. Staff carrying out searches are expected to be thorough but careful, “especially should a passenger indicate a medical issue that requires more delicate searching, or that they are sensitive to these practices”. The spokesman continued: “We have taken the opportunity to remind all our staff of the importance of being very careful and sensitive when carrying out physical searches.”
Unfortunately, airport security is a fact of modern life for all of us. If searches are becoming intolerable for you, it might be wise to consider using alternative modes of transport.
