Don't panic

Q Is it possible to upgrade the USB1 port on my laptop?

Barbara Hughson, via e-mail

A You can upgrade to a far faster USB2 connection by buying an adaptor such as the Belkin F5U222 (£21 from tinyurl.com/88nth). Slot the PC card into the relevant socket on your notebook, assuming your machine has one, and it should auto-install the right drivers. You will need to connect the power supply that comes with the card to run peripherals such as external hard disks — and your battery life will suffer, as PC cards suck up lots of juice.

BROAD DAYLIGHT

Q I am upgrading from dial-up to broadband. Will this affect my present e-mail account?

Peter Capell, Taunton

A If you change to a new ISP, you need to set up your e-mail client for the new service. Your provider should have instructions on this. You may not be able to collect messages from your old ISP without tweaking software settings, or paying for a mailbox.
