Don’t panic

Nigel Powell answers your home technology queries

Q Can you recommend a DVD machine that can record subtitles?

John Tate, Ayrshire

A You should be able to record subtitles on any DVD machine, provided you have the system set up properly. Attach the recorder to your television and aerial or set-top box, as you would with a conventional VCR, and select the subtitles option. You will need to switch on digital subtitles if you are using digital television services such as Freeview or Sky, as they are not transmitted via the teletext service. Visit www.tinyurl.com/3fdnq for more information.

ELUSIVE TROJAN

Q My AVG antivirus program keeps displaying a message about a trojan virus, but when I run a check, nothing is found. Any advice?

Chris Gaymer, Bristol

A It may be that the program is not able to detect this particular variant correctly, so try a different diagnostic tool and see what comes up. One option is to visit www.ravantivirus.com/scan and carry out an online scan to see if it picks up anything on your machine. If so, you may need to find a new anti-trojan program.

If it doesn’t pick anything up, you should uninstall and then reinstall AVG, which often clears glitches of this sort.

IMAGE-CONSCIOUS

Q Would I get a better digital picture from a scan of a high-quality photograph or a five-megapixel camera?

J Hanly, Ireland

A It depends on the quality of the camera against that of the scanner. Budget scanners will give a significantly poorer result than a good-quality five-megapixel camera with decent optics and components. By the same token, if you take a high-quality photograph to a bureau with a professional drum scanner, you will take away a superb scan. Visit www.yell.com to find one in your area. Don’t forget that printing is also an important part of the quality equation, so consider that when you are buying home digital- photography equipment.

RETIREMENT PLAN

Q I still occasionally use a 20-year-old computer with 5.25in floppy disks, but the time has come to retire it. How can I transfer the data?

Nigel Gates, Hertfordshire

A One method is to connect the old and new computers together using a cable and move the information over — visit www. wown.com/j_helmig/dccmain. htm for a detailed explanation of how to do this. If budget allows, though, you could talk to the people at Adaptive Conversions (www.adaptiveconversions.co.uk/conversion_soft.htm). It offers a transfer service for all sorts of weird and wonderful computer media, which should fit the bill.
