Sir, Holding John Terry’s affair responsible for England’s pitiful performances (report, June 21) is just another example of the media’s obsession with the negative role of women in this World Cup: the glamorous Dutch ambush marketers and the distracting Spanish TV reporter have also stolen the limelight in recent days.

Is kicking the ball leading to a “kick-the-dog effect”, with girls at the end of the chain taking the blame?

Sir, I fear that England’s poor showing at the World Cup will open the floodgates for players, manager etc to write books on where it all went wrong, therefore making more money for already highly paid underperformers.
