Doherty faces sentence for heroin possession

Troubled rock star Pete Doherty will be sentenced today after admitting possessing heroin.

The 26-year-old Babyshambles frontman and former boyfriend of Kate Moss will appear in the dock at Ealing Magistrates Court, west London.

The singer is in custody at Pentonville Prison.

At an earlier hearing, Thames Magistrates Court heard that Doherty was arrested by plain clothes officers in Whitechapel Road, east London, on January 26 at 3.30pm.

They were suspicious because he looked dishevelled and because he was a known drug user.

When they searched him, a wrap of white powder was found in the pocket of his jeans, but Doherty claimed he did not know it was there.

When District Judge Stephen Dawson refused an application for bail, he apologised to fans heading to his concerts who might be affected.

At a separate hearing, a charge of driving while unfit due to drugs against Doherty was dropped because of lack of evidence.

A prosecutor told the court that Doherty was one of four people inside a blue Vauxhall Vectra being driven erratically in east London on December 18.

But he said the Crown did not have sufficient evidence to prove Doherty was behind the wheel.
