In the largest data privacy investigation of its kind, DLA Piper advised the Information Commissioner’s Office on Operation Cederberg, which investigated data analytics in political campaigns, looking at the activities of Cambridge Analytica, GSR and Facebook. The scandal led to record-breaking criminal and civil regulatory enforcement action, including a £500,000 fine for Facebook from the UK’s data protection watchdog.
Among its big-money deals, DLA Piper’s lawyers advised MKS Instruments, which provides technology that measures manufacturing processes, on its $6.5 billion acquisition of Atotech, a chemicals technology company.
DLA, one of the largest law firms in the world, has set goals to improve diversity across its 74 offices. It wants 30 per cent of its partners to be women by 2025 and hopes to double its present percentage of women in the partnership to at least 40 by 2030. It is also seeking to ensure that half of its internal partner promotions are made to lawyers from under-represented groups.

The firm advised Scottish Water throughout the procurement of an eight-year contract to provide next-generation technology that is intended to make the company more efficient.
It also acted for the UK government in agreeing the legal framework for the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. This included negotiations over the use of key venues in Glasgow — where the conference is taking place from November 1 to November 12 — such as the SEC Centre and the Glasgow Science Centre.
