WHO DECIDES how many people an apartment can sleep? We recently took a holiday with Thomson Superfamily to the Sa Mirada Apartments in Minorca. It was extremely enjoyable. The only problem was the underoccupancy supplement, which is a real rip-off. There is no way that four adults could have slept comfortably in the flat. The bunk beds in the second room were not suitable for anyone more than 5ft tall, but when occupied by children, they incur an extra charge of £240. Given that the programme is designed for families, this hardly seems fair.

Thomson replies: “The room occupancy supplements are introduced into the pricing system because we negotiate rooms with hoteliers on a per-room, not a per-person, basis, so there is an additional fee for a lower occupancy.

“Thomson continually reviews the standards of accommodation. Our holidaymakers have been generally happy at the unit and it is licensed for four people. However, as this point has now been brought to our attention, we will look into it with the hotelier.”
