Directions: In brief

An offer that should be too good to be true, but isn’t. For one week only (September 5-12), Air Berlin is selling flight vouchers in Lidl supermarkets for £19. You can use the vouchers to book any flight on the carrier’s network (www.airberlin.com), up to the value of £69, for travel until March 2007 without any annoying restrictions. That’s a saving of up to £50 per flight.

And it’s not even a no-frills airline — you get an allocated seat and free trolley service. Surely there’s a catch — but we can’t find one.

EGYPT ALERT

Australia has advised its citizens to exercise a “high degree of caution” when they travel to Egypt because of a threat of terrorist attacks in Sharm el Sheikh and other resorts. “We continue to receive reports that terrorists are planning attacks against a range of targets,” said Egypt’s foreign-affairs department, emphasising the risk of travelling in the Sinai, where 23 people were killed in bomb attacks earlier this year. The Foreign Office has not issued any new advice for the area, but warns that there is still a high terrorist threat in Egypt. For the latest updates, visit www.fco.gov.uk.

RYANAIR PRICE RISE

As the restrictions on hand luggage continue to bite, passengers are being squeezed from the other end, with Ryanair raising the price of checking in bags. It now costs £7 for each item of baggage, for each one-way flight booked in at the airport — a rise of £2 — and £3.50 for each item checked in at the time of reservation.
