Directions: In brief

It already has a Eurostar link with the Continent, and now Kent is to get its inaugural direct flight to the USA. Taking off next May, the service from Cosmos Holidays and Monarch will provide a weekly route between the county’s international airport at Manston and Norfolk, Virginia, with flight-only prices starting at £379pp and premium upgrades from an extra £125.

WILDLIFE ALERT

British tourists are being urged to avoid bringing back wildlife souvenirs from their holidays after a new survey revealed that more than 600,000 of us have returned with trinkets made from wild animals, including ivory. “Most of these souvenirs are being bought unwittingly simply because travellers are confused by the complex laws governing trade in wild animals,” said the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which carried out the research. It may not have an infinity pool or blindingly white minimalist interiors, but it should prove a hit with the kids.

THE FUTURE OF TRAVEL

It sounds too good to be true, but airport-security chaos and in-flight chicken may be things of the past if ground-breaking research at Aberdeen University bears fruit. Boffins are investigating the fabric of space and time — the fourth dimension — apparently opening up the possibility of time travel. So you might be able to zip straight back to that golden Mediterranean holiday or forward to a lottery-winning jamboree in the Maldives. Rumours of Ryanair offering 1p time-travel specials remain unfounded.
