Barclaycard, which famously used Rowan Atkinson’s Johnny English character to advertise its complimentary protection, has been among the first to ditch the benefit. It cites tighter rules from the Financial Services Authority as the reason for its decision. Lloyds TSB has also dropped the cover from its credit card and Sainsbury’s Bank will withdraw its version next month. The Halifax no longer offers the cover to new applicants.
Insureandgo, the travel insurer, says: “We’re not surprised to see companies leave the travel-insurance market; it’s so complex. People need to check with their provider before travelling.”
