Arena: Encountering Bergman/Bergman and F?r? Island, BBC Four, 8.30pm/10.30pm
The reclusive director Ingmar Bergman only rarely gives interviews, but in 2003 spoke at length to his fellow Swede Marie Nyrer?d about his life and influential work. Her two films are showing tonight and tomorrow, the first – about Bergman’s relationship with the island he lives on – preceded by an introduction to his work, where Nyrer?d is joined in assessing the octogenarian’s place in cinema history by two people who have also interviewed him: the French director Olivier Assayas and our very own Melvyn Bragg. Bergman’s 1955 film Journey into Autumn is shown between.
