Did you hear?

In praise of analogue radio

Dixons has stopped selling analogue radios. And did you hear the rumble of disapproval from Radio 4-listening Middle England at the news? I had a bit of a harrumph myself, actually: the analogue radio in my house, a big, heavy, old Hacker, is much better than the rather expensive digital job imported by my daughter. The tone is rich and once you have found your station the signal is consistently as clear as a bell.

People may get nostalgic about the old crackle and hiss of analogue as it cough-starts its way to life in the morning, but I don’t think we need to worry. As long as we don’t lose the analogue signal, our old-fashioned radios will outlast these new-fangled DABs.
