Mouth-to-mutt resuscitation

The magnanimity of firefighters in aiding cats stuck in trees has long been acknowledged. In the past, however, the chief duty of Messrs Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew et al was to human beings. But people in Appleton, Wisconsin, are so fond of their pets that the fire brigade will henceforth carry oxygen masks for dogs, cats and other small animals.

“A pet is family to most people,” says Alderman Richard Thompson, who came up with the idea after seeing a newspaper photograph of a fireman giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a cat.

Does the London Fire Brigade plan to follow suit? “Not to my knowledge,” says a spokesman. Can it be long before “Masks 4 Mutts” gets off the ground here?
