From its origins in the City of London in 1742, Dentons has grown to become one of the largest law firms in the world, with offices in 81 countries. Describing itself on its website as “polycentric”, the firm says that it has “no single headquarters and no dominant national culture”.

Its partnerships in South America, Central America, Australia, the Pacific Rim, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Russia enable it to conduct a wide breadth of work.

This year, a Dentons team in the US worked with the firm’s lawyers in more than 40 other countries to advise WeFi, a company that, among other things, finances supply chains for international technology giants such as Dell.

Having acquired the Haymarket development site in Edinburgh for M&G Real Estate, Dentons has continued to advise on the £400 million scheme, which includes a 380,000 sq ft office development, a 350-room hotel and 40,000 sq ft of retail.

The firm also advised the Scottish vegan cheesemaker Bute Island Foods on its sale to the Canadian dairy company Saputo, which paid £109 million to buy Bute and an unrelated American whey protein factory.

In February this year, the firm in Scotland appointed Claire Armstrong to the newly created role of Scotland managing partner. Working alongside Kirsti Olson in Edinburgh and Alison Bryce in Glasgow, this completes an all-Scotland female leadership.
