David Cameron takes the wheel for charity trip to Poland

He is a former prime minister with time on his hands and perhaps looking for a bit of reputation rehabilitation.

But whatever his motivation, yesterday David Cameron said that he had set off in a lorry on a journey of more than 1,000 miles to take supplies to Ukrainian refugees in Poland.

Tweeting a picture of himself at the wheel, Cameron revealed that for the past two years he had been volunteering at an Oxfordshire charity set up to provide cheap surplus food to residents near Cameron’s home in Chipping Norton. The Chippy Larder provided food free during lockdown before turning its focus to help Ukrainian refugees.

Over the past two weeks Cameron said the charity had collected everything from nappies to first aid kits.

“I’m currently driving to Poland with two Chippy Larder colleagues to make our delivery to the Red Cross. It’s going to be a long drive, but I’ll keep you updated,” he said on Twitter. “The generosity of the community in West Oxfordshire — and of the British people more generally — has been typically phenomenal,” he added.

The type of vehicle Cameron appeared to be driving was unclear. Larger lorries can require special licences depending on their size and when the driver first passed the driving test.
