Conor Washington was finally among the goalscorers as Peterborough United moved to the top of Sky Bet League One with a 3-1 victory away to Colchester United.

Washington, without a goal in their first five games, had failed to score from a penalty before he claimed Peterborough’s first.

Darren Ferguson, the Peterborough manager, said: “We’re all delighted for Conor. His hard work for the team hasn’t gone unnoticed, but he needed a goal and it was a very good finish, especially after the penalty.”

Kgosi Ntlhe, who was sent off near the end, and Jermaine Anderson also scored for Peterbrough, with Freddie Sears replying for Colchester, who are in the bottom two and without a win.

Fleetwood Town’s 1-1 draw at home to Leyton Orient removed them from the top spot, their equaliser coming from a substitute, Stephen Dobbie, after Darius Henderson put Orient ahead.

Dele Alli and Benik Afobe scored in Milton Keynes Dons’ 2-0 win away to Crawley Town, whose forward Izale McLeod, a former Dons’ player, failed from the penalty spot when the scores were level.

Bradford City’s similar 2-0 victory came away to Rochdale, with goals from Jason Kennedy and James Hanson.

Police are investigating reports that a Port Vale fan racially abused Armand Gnanduillet, of Chesterfield, as the players left the pitch at the end of Chesterfield’s 2-1 away win.

The club will impose a lifetime ban on the fan if the allegations are substantiated. Ally Simcock, of the Port Vale Supporters’ Club, said: “I could see it was a serious issue by the way the players reacted.”
