Daley’s hopes hit by China crisis

Tom Daley may have recently pushed Qiu Bo all the way in competition but here is your reality check. Our Virtual Medal Table does not put him in a gold medal position, it does not even have him particularly close to the podium.

The VMT is a running form guide to the Olympic sports which The Times collates with Infostrada Sports. It follows every sporting event of significance and filters all the information into a whopping database – and is becoming established as the most authoritative form guide to the Games.

In diving, it is not Daley who will be the star of the Olympics, according to the VMT, but China. There are eight medal events in Olympic diving and the VMT has China in the gold medal position for six of them. It would be no surprise this summer if they get all eight.

Daley? The VMT has him in eighth position with his partner, Pete Waterfield, in the 10-metre synchro event, and seventh in the individual.

After his second place in Dubai last weekend and the Beijing World Series event this weekend, it will be interesting to see how high he can climb.
