Cycle Doc: How do I make my hybrid competitive?

I’m planning to use my Trek 7.5 FX (hybrid bike) to cycle more than 100 miles across Wales with two fellow riders who have very expensive racing bikes. I’m worried they’ll have an advantage over me, even though we’re all of similar fitness. Is there anything that I can do to my bike to level the playing field? NH, Frodsham, Cheshire

Even though your hybrid will be heavier, it should cope with the challenge. Unless you are racing, or riding for several days running, your friends’ advantage over you will be slight, at most. The one change that you could usefully make is to fit narrower, higher-pressure tyres. The Schwalbe Durano Performance Folding Road City Tyre (£28, wiggle.co.uk) has a narrower section and can be inflated to nearly 120psi, which should make your bike feel noticeably sportier.

I am using toe clips and straps on my pedals. Could I benefit by switching to cleats? MD, Radstock, Somerset

The connection between shoe and pedal is probably more secure with cleats and it is difficult to find cycling shoes that are designed for toe clips alone. That said, toe clips have made something of a comeback in hipster circles where they are seen as “retro cool”. Perhaps you should stick with yours now that fashion has turned full circle.
