Cutting the Civil Service down to size

Sir, Patience Wheatcroft makes some excellent suggestions for Mr Cameron (Comment, Jan 20). Splitting the dual role of the Cabinet secretary and reducing the size and power of an all-powerful and unaccountable Treasury is surely the way to go for the government-in-waiting.

While at it, he should decentralise more power to local authorities and make them smaller in size and more accountable for their actions. Also, restrict the size, fix the maximum number of and clarify the role of special advisers.

Our Civil Service is still the envy of the world, but a little renovation will go a long way to show the British people the seriousness of the Tory party and make our Government efficient, open, accountable and much more relevant to voters.
