Currie too hot for Hawks again

IT WAS a day of shocks in the BT Cup on Saturday with Glasgow Hawks, the favourites, being knocked out, GHA reversing their poor form in the second division to eject Stewart’s Melville, and Stirling County forgetting their recent problems to oust Aberdeen GSFP.

For all that, the talk was all about events at Malleny Park, where Currie, who had ended the Hawks’ ambitions of a league and cup double at the same stage last year, repeated the feat. Despite Ally Donalson, the winning coach, declaring that the Hawks are by a long way the best team in Scotland, they were never in the hunt and lucky to be ahead 9-3 at the break, mainly thanks to Currie’s kickers missing three shots at goal.

The second half was one-way traffic with Currie carving holes in the Hawks defence and Geoff Caldwell, the wing, raced in for the first try of the game. That was followed by a pair of sin-bins for the Hawks and a pair of tries for Currie from Mark Cairns and Doug Flockhart. A late exchange of tries by Mike Ker, for Currie and Ally Maclay, for the Hawks, had no bearing on the result.

Elsewhere, Dundee HSFP, finalists in the past two years, had a comfortable win over Kirkcaldy while Boroughmuir, the holders, were equally comfortable in beating East Kilbride. Melrose defeated Biggar but Hawick struggled to beat Preston Lodge.
