Criticism is affecting the players, says Bryan Robson

Bryan Robson is expected to talk to his chairman tomorrow as the pressure grows on the Sheffield United manager. Supporters called for Robson’s resignation after the draw at home to Scunthorpe United on Saturday that left the club seventeenth in the Coca-Cola Championship.

Tonight, Robson returns to his former side, West Bromwich Albion, looking for a first league win since January 12. His relationship with the fans is unlikely to mellow after he claimed that the Bramall Lane crowd were partly to blame for the failure to beat Scunthorpe. “The fans were on my back and the players’ backs very early on in the game and I felt that if we had had a better support, we might have gone on to win the game,” Robson said. “When they’re criticising me it’s passed on to the players. I don’t think it helped their performance at all.”

Robson replaced Neil Warnock last summer, shortly after the club were relegated from the top flight, and a promotion challenge had been predicted. While he faces discussions with Kevin McCabe, the future of Tony Mowbray, the West Bromwich manager, looks more secure: his team are second in the table and he has signed a contract extension to 2011.
