Court suicide by father who beat girl

A man committed suicide in court moments after being found guilty of repeatedly assaulting his baby daughter.

Ratnasabapathy Anandakumar, 40, of Northolt, West London, hid poison in a Coca-Cola bottle that he took into the dock at Isleworth Crown Court, West London. Moments before he was due to be sent to the cells he drank the poison as the judge, lawyers and jurors looked on. He died hours later in hospital.

Anandakumar had sat through a retrial, having been convicted two years ago, receiving a five-year sentence. He was given a retrial after his legal team insisted that a jury should be told of his mental condition.

His three-month-old daughter suffered four broken ribs, a broken left arm and left leg and is now severely disabled.

A security review will be carried out at the court. Security staff at court are required to remove anything suspects could use to harm themselves.
