Court favour

Sir, The courtroom exchange in TMS (Aug 22) brings to mind the incident when learned counsel FE Smith, later Lord Birkenhead, referred to the man in the dock as being “drunk as a judge”. He was interrupted by the judge who said: “I believe, Mr Smith, that the expression is ‘drunk as a lord’,” to which Smith rejoined: “As your lordship pleases”.
