Court backs presidential victory

The conservative Felipe Calderón won the fiercely disputed July 2 presidential election, Mexico’s top electoral court has ruled. “Felipe Calderón is declared President-elect of Mexico from December 1, 2006, to November 1, 2012,” Leonel Castillo, the head of the Federal Electoral Tribunal, said in a public session.

President Fox promptly congratulated Señor Calderón, his former Energy Minister and a fellow member of the National Action Party. There can be no appeal against the tribunal’s decision, adopted unanimously by seven judges.

Andrés Manuel López Obrador, of the Democratic Revolution Party, has said that he will continue to protest against what he claims was massive fraud. Señor Calderón had a 0.56 per cent lead in the closest presidential election in Mexican history. (AFP)
