Cortney Tidwell: Don’t Let the Stars Keep Us Tangled Up

It has been ages since anyone extended the Cocteau Twins/ Bj?rk lineage. But here are all the necessary ingredients — giddy vocals, ethereal drama and starburst guitars.

At least the Nashville-born Tidwell adds her own twist, namely a countrified injection of delicious Gothic Americana. The opening Eyes Are at the Billions, which changes mid- song from a spectral ballad into something that Sigur R?s would be proud of, makes it clear that she has expanded on the promise of her debut. She comes unstuck on the Bj?rk-lite Xerox of Illegal, but otherwise she draws you right in, especially on the stunning title track, a story of love between a human and a star- struck alien.
