THE HOWARD is a hidden gem in a superb location, just behind Victoria Embankment in London. Every room has sweeping river views, and Covent Garden, St Paul’s Cathedral, and the London Eye are within easy walking distance.
The hotel offers two conference rooms — the Fitzalan and Arundel suites — both of which enjoy natural light and air conditioning, and each is divisible into two soundproof spaces. They’re similar in size; the larger Fitzalan seats 120 theatre-style, or 200 for cocktails. Audiovisual technology is of the highest standard, and the Howard offers a dedicated conference organiser.
The unexpected bonus is the open space at the back. The courtyard garden is a delightful retreat from the adjacent conference rooms, and the transparent canopy lets guests enjoy fresh air whatever the weather.
Conference guests can sample the light, delicate food from the Jaan Restaurant, which is inspired by modern French cooking with an Asian twist. With its sliding glass doors opening on to the garden, the restaurant would make a good venue for parties.
Sample prices: £1,125 a day for the Fitzalan suite, including VAT. Special delegate day-rate, £59, valid from July 18 to August 31, which includes room hire, mid-morning refreshments, working buffet lunch, and afternoon tea.

Good for: convenience, price, location.
But: try to ignore the unimpressive entrance. You’ll be pleasantly surprised once inside
