Hate it or love it (and it will divide listeners) this CD is certainly a different take on Purcell, presenting some of his most famous dances and vocal pieces in versions that emphasise folk roots and folk styles of playing and singing (the pop vocalist Ana Silvera and veteran countertenor James Bowman among those involved). David McGuinness’s group also do naughty things to the harmonies, such as removing the ground-bass from An Evening Hymn. Invigorating and controversial. (Delphian, out now)
