Concerns over Libya

The British Embassy in Tripoli has raised Jaballa Matar’s case with the Libyan Government

Sir, Hisham has my full support and sympathy in the quest to find out what happened to his father (“Ask Libya about Matar, Mr Miliband”, letter, Jan 15). This is one of a number of concerns about human rights in Libya, and the British Embassy in Tripoli has raised the case with the Libyan Government, asking them to investigate further.

The UK has also expressed concern at the wider conclusions of the Human Rights Watch report published in Tripoli on December 12, and urged the Libyan Government to address the other specific cases highlighted in the report. We will continue to draw attention to cases of restriction of freedom of expression, freedom of association, arbitrary detention of political prisoners and mistreatment of migrants.
