Women may validly have different concerns about their house burning down or being broken into. What if our lipstick should melt? What if Burglar Betty is more interested in our handbags than making off with the television?

Sheilas’ Wheels, purveyor of female car insurance, has realised that women are crying out for home insurance tailored to their needs and this week launched a package.

The deal’s main marketing point is its new-for-old cover for clothes. New-for-old, for those not in the insurance know, is when items are replaced at their original value and not discounted for wear and tear. Attire is usually excluded – this is understandable, wearing our skirts and dresses as we do, frequently tearing them on furniture as a result of our limited spatial awareness. Additional features include cover for make-up, family legal representation and alternative accommodation when utilities cut out.

All this is fabulous, at least if your whole wardrobe doesn’t originate from Primark. Men – stomach the pink website and you can purchase it too. But a word of warning: these policies aren’t always the good deal they seem, sometimes doubling up with cover you have elsewhere. You can never have too many handbags, but as for insurance policies . . .
