Colder: Heat

Marc Nguyen Tan's 2003 debut album, Again, under his Colder nom de plume, was a murky missive from the bleaker shores of gloom-merchant electronica.

If Heat doesn't warm up the Parisian's heart - never mind the listener's - it does crack the odd smile. Compulsion and obsession drive both the subject matter and the music, the latter a meld of sepulchral, Ian Curtis-like incantation, hypnotic synth washes and robotic, hyperactive beat-making. Perhaps a little more light could have been let in, but tracks such as Wrong Baby, To the Music and Downtown capture the determinedly dark heart at Colder's core.
