Coventry 4 Barnsley 0
(Best 37, 84, Gray 70, Tabb 75)
Coventry might wish they could play Barnsley every week. They beat them 4-1 on the season's opening day and struck another four yesterday to end a four-game losing run in the league. Leon Best, who asked for a transfer last month, returned to the starting lineup and responded with two goals and two assists. He turned smartly to fire Coventry in front. He then sent in a cross for Julian Gray to double the lead. Best's header crashed off the crossbar for Jay Tabb to fire the third and he concluded the scoring from 12 yards

Ronnie Moore, the Tranmere manager, gave his son Ian, a former Leeds player, a start after his transfer from Hartlepool, and Moore Jr made dad happy, heading the second for Tranmere's fourth successive win

Walsall's 17-match unbeaten run came to an end with a 2-1 defeat at promotion rivals Carlisle. It was a timely return to form for the home side, who had lost three of their past four matches. Lee Holmes fired Walsall into a 23rd-minute lead. Marc Bridge-Wilkinson equalised from the penalty spot and substitute Danny Graham ended his own barren spell when he headed the winner in the 75th minute
