This year CMS, a global law firm with offices in more than 40 countries, advised the American technology company IBM in a high-profile claim brought by CIS, the insurance branch of the Co-Operative Group. At the end of a 32-day trial IBM won its counterclaim and CIS was awarded only about 10 per cent of the £130 million it had originally claimed.
Its lawyers are also advising on plans for the largest solar park in the UK. Cleve Hill Solar Park, a joint venture by Hive Energy and Wirsol Energy that is intended to be one of the lowest-cost generators of electricity in the UK. Construction is due to start early next year.
CMS is proud of its green credentials and continues to progress towards its ambitious plans to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025. The firm’s eight UK offices run on electricity from 100 per cent renewable sources.

During the first Covid-19 lockdown, CMS acted for the Scottish Event Campus in Glasgow on arrangements to allow Scottish ministers and the NHS to convert it into the Louisa Jordan Hospital, capable of treating up to 1,000 patients or dispensing 5,000 vaccinations a day.
The firm also advised the Norwegian private equity investor HitecVision on one of the largest energy deals in Scotland this year: the acquisition of North Sea oil and gas fields from ExxonMobil in a deal worth more than $1 billion.
