The international law firm CMS advised Octopus Energy, the British renewable energy group, on its takeover of Bulb’s 1.5 million customers after an almost year-long tender process run by Bulb’s administrators.
It advised Legal & General Assurance Society on its fourth and final buy-in policy with the British Steel Pension Scheme, totalling £2.7 billion, under which the remaining 40 per cent of liabilities were insured.
The firm also advised a consortium comprising Macquarie Asset Management and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation on its agreement to acquire a 60 per cent stake in National Grid’s UK gas transmission and metering business.

The firm’s recent Scottish business has included advising the global investment management company Nuveen on its £1 billion St James Quarter regeneration project in central Edinburgh. Located in a Unesco world heritage site, the scheme has replaced a range of 1970s buildings with new apartments, hotels, restaurants, shops and public spaces.
CMS also has a longstanding relationship with the Scottish Event Campus, a Glasgow venue. The firm advised on the development of the new 14,300-capacity OVO Hydro arena at the complex and the related commercial arrangements, including working on naming rights and sponsorship deals with organisations such as Heineken, Raymond Weil and Virgin Money.
