Twins were born to George and Amal Clooney yesterday, igniting delirium on social media.

“This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives,” Stan Rosenfield, the Oscar-winning actor’s publicist, said. The babies and their mother, an international human rights lawyer, “are all healthy, happy and doing fine”, he added. “George is sedated and should recover in a few days.”

Both Clooney, 56, and his wife, 39, are first-time parents. They married in 2014. Mr Rosenfield did not say where the twins were born, but Barack Obama visited the couple at their mansion by the Thames in Berkshire on May 27, People magazine reported. Clooney cancelled a visit to Armenia for a humanitarian event last weekend, explaining, “if my wife had twins while I was there, I could never come home”.

The pregnancy was confirmed in February, when Matt Damon, the actor who is a friend of the couple, let slip: “They’re going to be awesome parents. Those kids are lucky.” Yesterday “Ella and Alexander” was one of the top-trending topics on Twitter in the US.
