Classical: New Releases: Thomas Beecham: Sibelius, Symphony No 2; Dvorak, Symphony No 8

This coupling of Sibelius 2 and Dvorak 8 from Royal Festival Hall concerts of the 1950s, first issued on CD in 1990, was always one to treasure, even in the rather poor sound that dimmed its glories. Now, remastered, the works shine out. The 75-year-old Beecham galvanises the BBC Symphony into a Sibelius performance of tremendous force and intensity. I have never heard the long, tragic andante more eloquently played or more beautifully shaped; but the whole thing is vibrantly alive. The Dvorak, apart from some untypically sour oboes in the slow movement, is a delight, full of the zest that Beecham (by now 80) never lost. Four stars
