Richter’s concerts at the Aldeburgh festival in the 1960s produced not only some famous performances of Schubert four-hand music with Benjamin Britten, but also treasurable solo items, of which this generously filled CD is fruit. The exceedingly slow, meditative A flat allegretto, No 6 of the Moments musicaux, was probably easier to accept in the hall than it is on disc, but the other two are an unqualified delight. The Chopin Barcarolle receives a mercurial, impassioned performance.
Best of all is the truly awesome account of the Liszt B minor Sonata, superb alike in its electric virtuosity, beauty of tone and line, and structural mastery. Not to be missed. Four stars
