Though American born (1943) and bred, Montague has long been resident in London. His copious oeuvre, of which these are 14 (often brief) examples, moves comfortably between minimalism and electronics, American folk music and Cage-like surrealism. The title piece, a forceful diptych for the pianist Stephen Kovacevich, uses the ballad of a black railway worker and four spirituals in a way reminiscent of Frederic Rzewski. Paramell Va is a minimalist toccata for piano; the 13-minute Haiku is a new-age fantasy for piano and electronics; and the four studies of After Ives seem to sum up Montague’s interests. Three stars
