To call this an attractive compilation of Davies pieces is misleading, in that their subject matter is so dark. Or, if not dark, disconcertingly bright. O magnum mysterium, written for young singers and players (but an adult organist), is a remarkable juxtaposition of “innocent” modal carols, modernist orchestral improvisation and an organ Fantasia of diabolical complexity. Michael Bonaventure plays it with vehemence, and brings out the brooding quality of Three Organ Voluntaries, based on 16th-century motets. The disc includes the first recording of a Magnificat and Nunc dimittis written for the cathedral in 2004. Three stars
