The three works and four arrangements here afford a rounded portrait of this leading Danish composer. Although he began as an exponent of New Simplicity, even the early Stratifications is densely layered and complexly conceived. Nacht und Trompeten is mainstream modernism, vigorously achieved. But much the most seductive items are the “recompositions”, played by the BIT20 Ensemble under Ilan Volkov, of a Bach chorale (the effect one of visionary effortfulness), of Nielsen’s Three Piano Pieces, Op 59, and of the slow four (made slower still) from Schoenberg’s Six Little Piano Pieces.
