Class warfare

Those notorious playing fields, spelling mistakes and the acquisition of wealth

Sir, Gordon Brown must have forgotten the Duke of Wellington’s dictum that the Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton (report, Dec 3, and Matthew Parris, Opinion, Dec 5). A general election might be won there as well.

Sir, It is not only rude but seems rather incongruous of Gordon Brown to taunt David Cameron on his privileged education when we have a Prime Minister who cannot even spell (“I’m so sorry I got your dead son’s name wrong, says Brown — my writing’s awful”, report, Nov 11).

Doesn’t say much for his education, does it?

Sir, The difference between David Cameron and George Osborne compared with, say, Tony Blair and Peter Mandelson is that they brought their wealth into Parliament whereas Blair and Mandelson benefited from their positions in politics to generate their personal wealth.
