Civil Service may ban membership of BNP

CIVIL servants could be banned from belonging to the British National Party under plans being considered by the Government.

Civil servants and job applicants would have to disclose membership. Those already employed would be asked to leave the service. At present employees may join any legal organisation so long as they maintain impartiality at work.

Although any move could be controversial, it may prove to be a popular policy to float at Labour’s annual conference which begins at the weekend.

Nick Griffin, the leader of the BNP, criticised the proposal. He said: “This is all a left-wing Labour Party propaganda stunt.

“It’s an attempt at intimidation. They’re saying things to frighten people. Democracy and free speech either apply to everybody or nobody.”
