Sega/Xbox 360 (£39.99)
Welcome to the land of the giants and an intense mech-warrior experience delivering atmosphere and adrenalin rushes in equal measure.
The game’s futuristic storyline, such as it is, involves three warring superpowers that are reduced to endless confrontations. But the 40 or so single-player missions should be considered as little more than an elaborate tutorial. With six basic mech (hound) vehicles to master, each with subtle advantages and shortcomings in the battlefield, the missions are a chance to hone basic skills before heading online for the main event. It is the multiplayer experience that excels and separates this from mech games of yore.
Since these hounds are neither fast nor nimble, winning tends to be entirely the result of superior strategy and solid vociferous team-work over the headsets. The hounds and various destructibles dotted within the landscapes are well rendered, and the explosions look good. The rumbling sound effects also bring something refreshing to this blast of a war party.
