Charlie and Lola

Director: Kitty Taylor, U, 2005

Amid the shouting hysterics and the sickly sweet, there are gems of intelligent, funny children’s television that even parents can stomach. Adapted from Lauren Child’s books, Charlie and Lola is the latest triumph. Charlie is Lola’s big brother, helping the wilful little girl overcome her fear of spiders, refusal to eat tomatoes and denial that it’s bedtime by encouraging her flights of fancy and gently mocking her obsessive toddler behaviour. Child’s exquisite illustrations have become vibrant animation thanks to Tiger Aspect, better known for classic comedy than twee kiddies’ TV, and the children’s character voices buck the adult celebrity voiceover trend to great effect. Despite rather basic extras, this is a charming collection for under-tens.
