Chairmen await Stevens bung report

LORD STEVENS of Kirkwhelpington will announce the preliminary findings of his “bung” investigation at a meeting of the chairmen of the 20 Barclays Premiership clubs on October 2.

The outcome of the seven-month inquiry is awaited with trepidation by some of the clubs, amid speculation that several could be accused of making irregular payments in transfer deals, but Stevens, chairman of investigation firm Quest, said: “We have enjoyed the full cooperation of all clubs involved in transfers investigated so far and it is only right we present our initial report to the Premier League clubs as a whole. We will then be in a position to proceed accordingly.”

The FA is pondering whether to ask the BBC for video footage of their forthcoming Panorama programme in which an agent, whose identity is known to The Times, was secretly filmed naming ten clubs and six managers guilty of improper financial practices.

The FA did not comment on the matter last night, while the BBC’s legal department have still to decide whether the footage, in which the agent was speaking to an undercover journalist, will be featured in the progamme, which is due to be broadcast on September 18.
