Cash lures Scots south

HOURLY paid lecturers from Scotland are commuting south of the border to double their money in England.

Experienced academics getting £16 an hour in Scotland may receive £35 an hour in England, Times Higher Education (Jan 31) reports. Scotland has traditionally not paid hourly lecturers the same as full-time colleagues.

One Scottish lecturer says: “You end up working more than a full member of staff for terrible money.”

Meanwhile, the Welsh Assembly has been told that universities’ poor research base in the principality may harm future economic growth. “England had more than twice as many scientists and engineers working in world-class departments as Wales, while Scotland had three and a half times as many,” Swansea University says.
