A crass historical romp in which Ledger stars as the libidinous 18th-century nobleman. Anyone who admired Ledger’s subtle turn in Brokeback Mountain will be appalled to see him leering here like an extra on The Benny Hill Show. Casanova has fallen in love with a feminist philosopher (Miller), a role that calls for feisty and spirited, but sappy and bland is the best she can offer. That this puerile piece of vaudeville was directed by Hallström only goes to show what a hack director he has become.
