A care worker who is accused of poisoning the food of elderly residents and members of staff at a West Midlands residential home has been charged with attempted murder.

Melissa Swift, 23, worked at the Goldfield Court care home in West Bromwich and was arrested after 16 of the residents and staff fell ill last month with food poisoning.

One of the victims was over 90 years old and four elderly residents had to be rushed to hospital after suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea.

All recovered but Ms Swift was arrested by West Midlands police on August 4. She underwent a psychiatric assessment at a secure unit before returning for questioning this week. Ms Swift was charged with attempted murder and making threats to kill.

Goldfield Court is described as providing “extra care housing” for elderly residents, with 93 flats run by Housing & Care 21 in conjunction with Sandwell council.

A statement on the company’s website said: “Housing & Care 21 can confirm that a care worker has been suspended from Goldfield independent living scheme in West Bromwich.

“We are providing information and assistance to the police and Sandwell Social Services and will support them with any further investigation.”
