Career clinic

This week’s expert is Emily Aldrich, director of the recruitment firm Aldrich & Company

Q: I’ve been in my job for nearly 17 years. I have lots of experience working for the heads of departments and covering PA roles. I know I can do well in a new job but I worry about interviews. How can I boost my confidence?

A: It’s no surprise that after 17 years in the same job any change seems a daunting prospect. But the fact that you’re looking for a challenge shows a positive attitude.

You have worked for the heads of departments, which says much about your leadership skills and ambition. It shows that you work well in a team and are trustworthy. Handling management displays knowledge of how company finances work. And the PA jobs give insight into your efficiency and communication and organisational skills. With all this on your CV, any interviewer will be impressed.

A potential employer will admire your resolution to find a challenge. You know you’d be good at a new job and self-belief will come across well.

First impressions count: clean, smart clothes are vital. Stand up straight, and smile — you’ll emanate confidence. Be polite, friendly and honest; your CV will speak for itself.
